Atlanta Public Schools Partners With Lyft to Provide Free Rides During Pandemic

According to WSB-TV 2 Atlanta, Lyft and Atlanta Public schools are partnering to ensure families have access to reliable transportation during the COVID-19 pandemic. So far, the LyftUp initiative has helped 110 local families access to jobs, education, groceries, voting, and bikesharing.

Through the partnership, Lyft is providing free credit rides for students and their families who did not have or had limited access to public transportation because of the pandemic. As schools plan to start in a matter of weeks, the collaboration will continue through August so families who need to take essential trips will be able to do so free of charge.

In an interview with the WSB-TV 2, Monica Hart, who lives 35 minutes from her son’s high school, discussed taking advantage of the program: “We live in South Fulton to Dekalb County over to Phoenix Academy, once we got over there we got with our guidance counselor and she pretty much hooked us up with the rideshare and Lyft which enabled him to get back and forth to school every day and to become a 2020 graduate. I was so happy because my car was down, and it just was an inconvenience. He had to catch about two trains and maybe a bus to get to where he needed to be. So with that, it helped us out a lot.”

Atlanta Public Schools is not the only partner Lyft has. According to its website, the company is collaborating with more than 500 partners across the United States. This includes nonprofits, school systems, labor unions, government agencies, and corporations.

In regard to the pandemic, the company has recognized that natural disasters strike low-income communities the hardest. As such, the LyftUp Alliance focuses on providing local organizations and first responders with the resources they need to help community members access urgent services, shelters, and other critical resources.
