Southern Nevada is continuing to experience a rideshare driver shortage. To address the issue, Uber is looking to reinstate surge pricing; however, the company is currently unable to do so because the governor’s state of emergency declaration prohibits the practice.

On March 31, a North Carolina law student, Kimberly Mariduena, lost all of her possession, missed her flight, and had to deal with unexpected costs because of her Uber driver’s actions.

Over the past 12 months, Uber’s business has dropped by 80 percent. With the pandemic, many drivers decided they did not want to risk contracting or spreading COVID-19. Now, however, Uber is facing a driver shortage as passenger demand is increasing across the country. With more than a quarter of the U.S. population vaccinated, Uber is looking for ways to incentivize drivers to return.

To push back against AB5 last year, Uber let California rideshare drivers see ride destinations before picking up passengers and let them set pricing. This was in an effort to prove they were independent contractors. Now, however, Uber is looking to reverse those policies.

The California Air Resources Board has proposed a regulation that would require all rideshare vehicles to be electric by 2030.
