On June 23, 2020, a man riding an electric scooter was killed in an apparent hit-and-run accident in Brooklyn. According to ABC7 Eye Witness News, no arrests have been made at this time. Police are currently attempting to identify and locate the driver.

Just after 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the e-scooter accident victim was found at East 98th Street and Avenue N. The victim, an unidentified man in his 30s, was found lying on the road next to his scooter. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

According to witnesses, the man was struck by a Jeep Grand Cherokee that was traveling eastbound on Avenue N. After the driver hit the victim, they also hit a fire hydrant and a parked unoccupied vehicle. Then, the Jeep operator ditched the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

This fatal accident happened just a short time after New York’s 2021 Budget legalized electric scooters and electric bicycles. According to the National Law Review, however, electric scooters are still illegal to use in New York City.

If New York City decides to legalize the scooters, additional safety measures will be outlined in an attempt to reduce accidents and save lives. Some of the safety measures could include the requirement for the use of helmets, lower speed limits, and provisions addressing use while intoxicated.

E-scooter accidents have the potential to result in serious, if not fatal injuries. In the event you’re involved in a wreck while operating an e-scooter, it’s important to understand your legal rights and options. Depending on your injuries and losses, you may consider filing an e-scooter accident claim.

Filing a claim can be complex depending on the nature of the accident. In the event of a hit-and-run, your lawyer will need to utilize resources at the accident scene, like security cameras for local businesses, to attempt to identify the driver. The police will do the same. In the event the driver cannot be identified, your attorney will help you pursue compensation through your own insurance policy.
