On April 22, 2021, an e-scooter rider was hit and killed by an on-coming car in downtown Salt Lake City.
At approximately 11:40 a.m. that Thursday morning, an unnamed man was riding an electric scooter at the intersection of 600 South and 500 East. He ran a red light and was hit and killed by a car traveling in the on-coming direction in the right-of-way. The man was in his early 40s.
At the time of the incident, police did not release the identity of the man [ending notification of family members. The e-scooter rider was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The driver stayed on the scene to cooperate with authorities.
Based on news reports, it seems that the man was riding an electric but not motorized scooter. It was a privately-owned device and did not belong to any rental company. Police are still investigating the accident.
