A female entrepreneur has plans to make the rideshare industry safer for women. Kim Evans, CEO of Just Her Rideshare, is developing a new transportation option on the East Coast that is expected to make its way to Chicago.
As far as expanding beyond the East Coast, Evans said, “Chicago is always coming up. There are so many carjackings that it’s so unsafe, and I’m thinking what’s happening there, not only is it unsafe for riders, but it’s unsafe for drivers.” According to Chicago police, at least seven rideshare drivers were held at gunpoint and carjacked in just the last month within city limits.
In regard to U.S. rideshare app usage, approximately 52 million passengers are women, but women make up less than 15% of rideshare drivers. Statistically, women are less likely to perpetrate physical crimes against each other, which is why this new company has the potential to reduce rideshare crimes against women.
Just Her Rideshare plans to hire female drivers exclusively. They will not discriminate against those who wish to use the service; however, they are hoping to primarily serve women. The company plans to offer incentives and bonuses to female drivers and create resources for women to engage with one another.
Locals are excited about the prospect of safer rideshare alternatives for women. Ashely Richardson, a future rider, told Fox 32, “Kim is definitely adding a peace of mind aspect to a lot of women and especially a lot of professional women that are ridesharing all of the time.”
At this time, there is a waitlist for driver signups, as the company is still in its early stage. According to the Just Her Ride website, the company mission is to “provide a safe alternative rideshare for women and provide an opportunity for them to earn revenue in a safe work environment.” In regard to the company’s vision, it is to “build a community of women taking care of women through the rideshare industry, social connection and by empowering them to flourish and be the best version of themselves.”
