According to Oklahoma City Police, a Lyft driver was robbed and shot multiple times after picking up a man and a woman in the Del City area around 3:30 a.m., September 28.
The rideshare driver, Tommy Cross, 55, attempted to drive away after having been shot but crashed his car into a garage and a parked truck a few blocks away from where the attack happened. The attackers fled the scene are still at large.
Multiple neighbors witnessed the aftermath of the shooting. According to Troy Williams, “The dogs just woke me up. Something was going on outside. So I let the dogs out. Just figured maybe it was a cat or something. The house behind this is a kid I went to school with in grade school. He just moved back there and I was going, ‘oh man, I hope it ain’t him.’”
By the time emergency crews arrived at the scene, Cross was in critical condition. According to his wife, Sheryl Cross, he is still fighting for his life. She also mentioned wanting Lyft to do more to protect drivers in the future.
In response to the shooting, Lyft released the following statement: “We are deeply saddened by this incident. The behavior described is unacceptable, and we have permanently removed the rider from the Lyft community. We are in touch with Tommy’s family to offer support and will continue to assist law enforcement with their investigation.”
