According to Austin Police, an unknown gunman shot at a Lyft driver and passenger in east Austin. The shooting occurred late Tuesday, July 22. While the driver was unharmed, the passenger was hit.
Austin Police initially stated the driver worked for Uber, but the driver later confirmed that he worked for Lyft. According to the driver, he went to pick up the passenger at 11:29 p.m. He had taken a right on Webberville Road. When passing a black Jeep Cherokee, he saw a hand go out the window and heard gunshots.
The Lyft driver continued up Webberville to 12th Street, before stopping at a Super 8 Motel. In total, the driver heard four shots. Two of the four hit his car. One of the bullets went through the back of the trunk and through the back passenger seat. The second put a hole in the vehicle’s gas tank.
While a bullet did strike the passenger, it did not penetrate her skin. When EMS asked the driver if his passenger was bleeding, the passenger said no. She had the bullet in her hand and a welt on her body where the bullet made contact.
According to KXAN, the police are not classifying this incident as a drive-by shooting at this point. They did not provide any additional information. The Lyft driver told KXAN that local police told him they suspect this was an attempted carjacking and the shooter got made when the driver didn’t stop. A witness who saw the shooting, however, believes it was a possibly driver-by. The witness said he heard seven or eight shots—one of which be believes hit a neighbor’s home.
There is currently no additional information on the shooting or potential perpetrators. Austin police are working to identify the shooter and determine a motive.
