On January 31, 2020, a Lyft vehicle carrying five people, four passengers and the driver, and an ambulance, responding to an incident at the Poughkeepsie, NY train station, collided at the intersection of Mill and North Bridge Streets. Several people were sent to the local hospital with injuries.
According to the Mid-Hudson News Network, the crash occurred shortly after 10 p.m. The Mobile Life Support Services (MLSS) ambulance was responding to a call at the train station for a person experiencing leg pain. While en route, the ambulance collided with the Lyft. The ambulance was operating its lights and siren at the time of the wreck.
Because of the force of the accident, the Lyft left the roadway and crashed in a convenience store at the intersection. The ambulance struck the vehicle again, forcing it further into the side of the store.
The City of Poughkeepsie Police and Fire responded quickly to assist the injured and stabilize the building to prevent further injuries. To help the injured, which included some of the passengers from the Lyft and the two medics in the MLSS ambulance, additional ambulances from the Fairview Fire District were called to the scene. One of the ambulance employees suffered a laceration to his head. No other official reports have been released regarding injuries to the others involved.
The convenience store, Muzzie’s, sustained substantial damage as a result of the accident – particularly to the foundation. No patrons or store employees were injured in the crash, but the store’s interior had shelving and product displaced. An inspector from the city’s building department arrived on scene to assess the damage. The inspector required the store close down until an engineer can assess the damage more thoroughly.
The City of Poughkeepsie Police is still investigating the accident. Videos and statements were collected from nearby witnesses. That evidence is being reviewed to determine what and who caused the accident.
