Uber and UZURV are now a part of the Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA). This is a first-in-the-region partnership.

The new program offers same-day, door-to-door service for seniors age 55 and older and current Tel-A-Ride customers through the designated service area to and from specified healthcare facilities in West Ashley, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, and on the Peninsula.

The latest expansion increases healthcare access to those in need, particularly seniors, by adding ten hours of operations per week. In addition, trips with Uber and UZURV cost $4 each way, and rides can be scheduled in as little as one hour’s notice or up to 30 days in advance.

In a press release from CARTA Board of Directors Chairman Mike Seekings, he said, “The expansion of CARTA OnDemand means one thing for seniors: access to healthcare on-demand. Since the pilot program debuted earlier this year, we have received many requests from seniors outside of the Peninsula. We’re excited to roll out this expanded service so whether you live near the Medical Center in North Charleston or reside on the Peninsula – you will now have access to transit on demand for essential trips to and from your healthcare providers.”

Riders who need wheelchair accommodations must request a ride through UZURV through the customer service center at 843-592-3505. All drivers to certified to assist rides to and from vehicles upon request.

For riders looking to use Uber, they need the proper voucher showing eligibility and a smart device to order a ride. Seniors receive the voucher once approved for the program.

Both UZURV and Uber responded to their participation in the program. UZURV CEO john Donlon said, “UZURV is grateful for the opportunity to help provide increased access to specified medical centers to the CARTA community so that eligible riders gain access to the medical care they need to live happier and healthier lives.” Senior Manager for Public Affairs for Uber Javier Corresoso said, “Whether it’s helping seniors regain their independence or providing newfound mobility options to those living in underserved areas, Uber has changed the way people live their lives in many unexpected ways.”
