Santa Clara police are investigating a fatal accident between a rideshare vehicle and a pedestrian.

The accident occurred on Wednesday, November 4, around 4:25 p.m. on the Montague Expressway. Two pedestrians walked along the roadway between Mission College Boulevard and Agnew Road when one of the pedestrians was struck by a vehicle. When officers arrived at the scene, a man, 57, was suffering from serious injuries. While life-saving efforts were made, he died at the scene. The woman who was walking with him was not injured.

Before the collision, the motorist, an active rideshare driver, traveled southbound on Montague in a white 2017 Honda Accord. While in the number four lane of traffic, he lost control of his vehicle and struck the man.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police. According to police, alcohol or drugs do not appear to have played a role in the accident. The investigation is ongoing. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release the man’s identity once his next of kin has been notified.

Anyone with information about this accident is asked to call Santa Clara police traffic investigator Nick Cusimano at (408) 615-4764.

It is unclear which rideshare company the driver was working for at the time of the accident. At this time, no rideshare company has come forward with a statement regarding the accident.

While this is the first recent incident in the Bay Area involving a pedestrian and rideshare vehicle, it’s not the first pedestrian accident. Just days after this accident, an 84-year-old woman was killed by a truck while bicycling in Santa Clara. In San Jose, a pedestrian died after being hit by a light-rail train.

To prevent these types of accidents, drivers and pedestrians need to be aware of the best safety practices when sharing roadways. Pedestrians need to take precautions to remain visible and stay out of the direct line of traffic. Drivers need to be aware of the pedestrians and bicyclists near them and know how to maneuver around them safely.
