Richmond Couple Livestreamed “Nightmare” Uber Ride

A couple in Richmond, Virginia live-streamed their Uber ride on Facebook as their driver was speeding through the streets of the city in an attempt to catch another car that rear-ended them.

John Murray and Tameka Swann were picked up from their home on the city’s Northside around 8 p.m. on February 10, 2020. Shortly after their driver pulled away from the curb, the vehicle was rear-ended on Chamberlayne Avenue. According to Swann, the Uber driver pulled over to exchange information, but the other driver quickly went around them and sped off. That’s when the Uber driver began to chase after the hit-and-run driver.

Murray started streaming the trip on Facebook Live from the backseat. The video showed the Uber driver call 911, hand his cellphone to Swann, and proceed to speed through stoplights and stop signs in pursuit of the other vehicle.

During the chase, the couple and the 911 dispatcher demanded the driver stop, but the Uber continued to speed through the city. Upon reaching an intersection at West Broad Street and Arthur Ashe Boulevard, an SUV crashed into the side of the Uber, but the driver sped away, narrowly missing a bicyclist.

It seemed to Swann that the Uber driver had tunnel vision and disregarded everything else around him in pursuit of the other vehicle. Eventually, the Uber driver stopped at West Marshal Street and Hermitage Road, where they met with a police officer. After the incident, Murray and Swann were examined at a local hospital and discharged with minor bruises.

Uber and Richmond Police detectives are investigating the hit-and-run. In response to the event, a spokesperson from Uber said, “This driver’s behavior is concerning, and we have removed his access to the app pending investigation.”

Dangerous, negligent rideshare drivers need to be held accountable for their actions. While it’s yet to be seen how the couple will handle the ordeal they were wrongfully put through, it’s important for Uber accident victims to understand their legal rights and options when it comes to filing a claim and seeking compensation for losses.
