Downtown Chicago has seen an influx of rideshare carjackings. As a result, drivers are being cautioned to verify identities and keep doors locked before letting potential passengers in their vehicles.
Rideshare drivers are not the only victims. Now, it seems pedestrians are at risk of being attacked. The random attacks involve a group of teens. One of the most recent attacks was caught on video by a passing driver.
According to CBSN Chicago, a rideshare driver recorded the attack of a woman who was walking in the middle of the crosswalk at Jackson Boulevard and State Street. The driver pulled up to the red light at Jackson and State around 11:30 p.m. on August 14, 2021. Their dashcam captured the attack on video.
In the video, you can see the group of alleged teenagers dragging the woman on the ground. She can be heard screaming. A man in a white shirt attempts to help the woman as he starts fighting the attackers.
The teens appear to grab what looks like a bag left on the street as the woman tries to get up and walk away. The woman collapses in the road, and the man in the white shirt comes to help her. As of August 15, the woman was listed as being in critical condition at a local hospital. After the attack, the teens, some of them on Divvy bikes, made their way down the stairs to a Chicago Transit Authority subway platform.
According to police, this is one of the five attacks that occurred in the Loop from Saturday until Monday. It appears that groups of three to 12 teenagers go up to victims and demand their belongings. The teens then surround the victim and beat them until they give up their property.
In addition to the attack at Jackson Boulevard and State Street, the other attacks happened at the following times and locations:
- 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 14, in the 300 block of South State Street
- 5:23 p.m. Sunday, August 15, in the 100 block of East Balbo Drive
- 1:03 a.m. Monday, August 16, in the 400 block of South State Street
- 8:37 a.m. Monday, August 16, in the 0-99 block of East Madison Street
Police are investigating the attacks and trying to identify the perpetrators. Currently, the oldest suspect has been 19, and the youngest 12.
