Teen Girls Charged With Carjacking, Murder of Uber Eats Driver

Two teen girls have been charged with the carjacking murder of an Uber Eats driver in Washington, D.C. The incident occurred in the afternoon near Nationals Park on March 23, 2021.

Mohammad Anwar, 66, was working as an Uber Eats driver when the girls, 13 and 15, assaulted him with a Taser while stealing his vehicle. The incident was captured on camera and shared with Fox 5.

In the video, the teen girls get into Anwar’s car and attempt to speed away with Anwar still hanging on the driver’s side door. The car sideswiped a metal barrier and light pole, which caused the open driver’s door to slam against Anwar’s body. The car raced down the street out of sight and crashed. Both girls jumped from the wrecked vehicle, and Anwar was left face down on the sidewalk.

At this time, the juvenile suspects have not been named, but both have been charged with felony murder and armed carjacking. According to police, it is not the first crime for one of the girls in recent months: “We also know that at least one of them had been arrested in something very similar back in January where they were arrested for that as well. So it does seem there was a pattern there.”

The younger girl is from the southeast section of D.C., while the older is from Fort Washington, Maryland. Their next court date is March 31, 2021.

Uber has responded to the event, saying, “We are devastated by this tragic news, and our hearts go out to Mohammad’s family during this difficult time. We’re grateful the suspects have been arrested and thank the Metropolitan Police Department for their diligence with this investigation.”

In an effort to assist with related financial losses, Anwar’s family set up a GoFundMe page. The page notes that Anwar “was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend who always provide a smile when you needed one. He leaves behind a family, near and far, who cherish, love, and miss him dearly.”

As mentioned by the police, this is not the first carjacking in D.C. in recent months. Rideshare drivers seem to be regular targets.
