An Uber driver in Harris County was struck by a police officer pursuing a teenage suspect. The fatal accident happened early Sunday, August 2nd.

The man who lost his life was Bismark Asare, who was working his second job as an Uber driver. He was 40 years old.

When he was driving at the 18200 block of the Katy Freeway with a 27-year old passenger, an officer was pursuing a speeding Chrysler with a 17-year-old boy and a woman. The chase began around 1:30 a.m.

The deputy followed the Chrysler after the occupants were spotted arguing in a parking lot. The two started to speed when the deputy followed and reached speeds up to 90 mph. The Chrysler didn’t pull over when the deputy attempted to pull them over.

The chase didn’t last long, about three minutes, when the Chrylser swerved around Asare’s car. Unfortunately, the deputy rear-ended the car. The deputy vehicle veered off the road and Asare’s vehicle was left in the middle of the road.

Asare and the passenger were taken to a hospital. Asare was pronounced dead at the hospital and the passenger sustained non-life threatening injuries. The deputy also went to a hospital and was released later the same day.

The suspects being pursued also crashed. While the boy was found and in custody, the woman has not yet been found.

Asare’s family felt the chase was reckless as an innocent life was lost during the pursuit. However, the Sheriff’s office stated they believed the passenger in the suspect’s car was in danger.  The police also said that the driver of the Chrysler made the decision to put lives in danger and that decision is what resulted in Asare’s tragic death.

Asare’s family wants to prevent accidents like this from happening in the future. They said that even though there was a chase occurring, the speeding needs to be reduced. As seen in this occurrence, the only person to lose their life was an innocent person who had nothing to do with the incident.
