Two Houston women riding in the back of an Uber were killed after another driver slammed into the rideshare vehicle. Police suspect the driver who caused the accident was taking part in a street race before leading police on a chase with speeds topping 100 mph.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began when deputies attempted to pull over Brian Tatum, 51, as he and another car raced through several red lights in the area of Jensen Driver and Tidewell Road. While the other vehicle stopped, Tatum led deputies on a chase with excessive speeds.
The pursuit continued for nearly a mile and ended when Tatum smashed into an Uber that was making a left turn at the intersection of Jensen Driver and Parker Road. The speed at which Tatum was driving resulted in the rideshare vehicle being cut in half. Both Uber passengers were ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The rideshare driver and Tatum were taken to Ben Taub Hospital to be treated for their injuries. Since then, Tatum has been discharged and transferred to the county jail. He was arrested on felony murder charges.
This is not the first time Tatum has served time. In August 2014, he was sentenced to more than five years in prison after being found guilty of assault with a firearm and convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Tatum was released in September 2016.
In response to the early release, District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert wrote at the time, “Mr. Tatum is a dangerous individual and a continuing threat to public safety. The entire record in this case shows Mr. Tatum has no interest in reformation or rehabilitation, and makes clear that if he is released early, he would pose a current unreasonable risk to public safety.”
At this time, Uber has not commented on the accident. The identities of the two female passengers have not been released.
