A California Uber driver was arrested after he allegedly choked and sexually assaulted a female passenger. The incident occurred just after 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 9 when the 51-year-old victim hailed an Uber to take her to work.
The driver, identified as 30-year-old Jason Humberto Rodas of Garden Grove, suddenly canceled the passenger’s trip while en route to her workplace. He told her the ride would be free of charge.
After canceling the trip, Rodas began asking the passenger about her sex life, which frightened her and made her uncomfortable. As he continued to ask her questions, she demanded he stop and take her to work.
Rodas, however, ignored her requested and threatened to throw her out of the vehicle if she called the police. He began driving erratically until coming to a stop in the 300 block of South Minnie Street. The passenger attempted to jump out of the vehicle, but Rodas caught up to her, according to police. He reportedly placed her in a chokehold and strangled her before sexually assaulting her.
A security guard from a nearby business heard the woman’s screams and ran over to help. By this time, Rodas fled the scene. Police were able to use security tapes, the license plate of the vehicle, and the driver’s name on the Uber app to find Rodas. Police secured a search warrant on Rodas’ home to secure additional evidence and he was booked on suspicion of sexual assault charges, including kidnapping with the intent to commit rape. He is being held on $1 million bail and investigators believe he may have committed other crimes based on his actions.
In a statement, Uber described the incident as “horrific and something no one should have to experience.” According to Uber, they are ready to cooperate with law enforcement and they appreciate their swift investigation.
