On February 3, 2020, an Uber passenger noticed his driver seemed to be driving him to his destination while watching a video on a screen propped up on the dashboard. The passenger recorded the incident on his phone and submitted an official complaint to Uber.
According to Boston 25 News, a Boston, Massachusetts man, wanting to only be known as Mike, discovered he had a flat tire and called on the rideshare company to get him from Lynn to Revere around 2 a.m. that Monday morning.
Once the Uber arrived, the first thing the passenger noticed was the presence of the driver’s cellphone. Like most Uber drivers, the cell phone was mounted on the dashboard with the Uber app and GPS on. That, however, was not the only device. There was a second phone resting on the speedometer on the steering wheel. It appeared to Mike that the driver was wearing earbuds and had some sort of video playing.
During the trip, the passenger did not say anything to the driver: “To be honest, [I didn’t say anything] because I needed to get home at 2:30 a.m., and I know they have the right to kick you out of their car.” Instead, Mike recorded the incident on his phone and now has video evidence of the driver steaming a video during the trip, while the car was in motion. The trip lasted for about 10 minutes and cost $11.
In response to the incident, Uber said, “We apologize for this rider’s poor experience and are working to resolve it. The safety of riders and drivers who use the Uber platform is a top priority.” In addition to that, Uber gave Mike a credit of $3 for his ride; but that refund did not address the safety concern. It has yet to be seen if the driver will face any consequences for his distracted driving.
