On October 5 in Brookhaven, Georgia, an Uber driver was shot twice on Buford Highway. Investigators believe the shooting was a result of road rage.
At the time of the accident, which was around 4:30 a.m., the driver did not have any passengers. According to Brookhaven police Deputy Chief Brandon Gurley, the driver was hit in the abdomen and thigh but is expected to survive.
Prior to the incident, the victim was traveling south on Buford Highway and what shot approximately 300 yards from the Briarwood Road intersection. Several people called 911 to report the shooting. When the investigation started, only one southbound lane of Buford Highway was open at Briarwood Road. The other lanes reopened by 11:15 a.m.
Police released the following statement: “The situation is being described as a possible road-rage incident. The suspect vehicle was not on scene when our officers arrived. We are currently still processing the crime scene, collecting shell casings and other evidence that may have been left behind. The best description we have right now is a white passenger car. We are working to gather more information about the made and model of that vehicle and the occupants.”
Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to contact Brookhaven Police. Uber has yet to respond to the incident.
This is not the only recent road rage related rideshare shooting. Only a matter of days prior to the shooting in Brookhaven, a Lyft driver was shot in Denver, Colorado in a suspected road rage incident. At that time, a passenger was in the vehicle. In response to that shooting, Lyft released the following statement: “The safety of our Denver community is fundamental to Lyft. We’ve been in touch with the driver and rider involved in this incident to offer support, and stand ready to assist law enforcement as needed.”
