On Sunday, February 16, 2020, an Allston woman told Boston police a man claiming to be her rideshare driver drove off route toward the New Hampshire border.
According to the Boston Globe, the unidentified woman was out with friends at Paddy O’s on Union Street near Faneuil Hall when she ordered a Lyft shortly before 1 a.m. Her cellphone battery died after she ordered the ride, but a group of men pointed her toward a silver or tan sedan. While Lyft confirmed she summoned a car, it’s unclear as to whether the abductor was her assigned driver.
Once she got inside the vehicle, the man behind the wheel drove in silence for nearly 30 minutes before stopping at a gas station. A different man approached the car, telling her to stay inside. Instead, she jumped out of the car and flagged down another vehicle that took her to Allston.
In response to the incident, Lyft had this to say: “Safety is fundamental to Lyft. We take any allegation like this incredibly seriously, and are conducting a thorough investigation of the incident. We have been in touch with the rider to offer support, and have deactivated the driver while we investigate. We have been in contact with law enforcement and will continue to help in every way we can.”
Patrons of Paddy O’s were not surprised to learn about the incident. While the abductions are frightening, they’re no longer shocking after years of reports regarding assaults and kidnappings by rideshare drivers. In January and February 2019, there were two high-profile kidnappings in the same area.
Following the abduction, police officers are asking the public to exercise caution when heading home from a night out. City officials released a 33-page guide containing safety recommendations for bars, nightclubs, and their patrons. Tips include staying inside while requesting a ride, ensuring you’re entering the correct vehicle, and sharing trip details with a friend or relative who can track the trip.
