In an effort to encourage safe driving and reduce instances of impaired driving, the Las Vegas Coalition for Zero Fatalities has partnered with Lyft to offer free rides in Las Vegas over the Halloween weekend.

In total, the Coalition has pledged $800 towards free Lyft rides. Beginning on Friday, October 30 at 6 p.m. and running through Sunday, November 1 at 6 a.m., Zero Fatalities, in affiliation with Dignity Health, Zappos, and Distill bar, will offer $10 off one Lyft ride per user.

According to Zero Fatalities Program Manager Andrew Bennet, Nevada has seen an increase in pedestrian fatalities compared to 2019: “So far this year, Nevada has seen a 22% increase in pedestrian fatalities statewide compared to last year, with impairment and speeding continuing to be the top causes of these deaths. As we head into a historically deadly holiday weekend, the Las Vegas Coalition for Zero Fatalities aims to reduce the number of preventable deaths we see year over year.”

Zero Fatalities and Lyft hope that this partnership will reduce instances of injuries and fatalities over the Halloween weekend. The limited-time offer can be applied within the Lyft mobile app using the code NevadaDay2020.

According to Zero Fatalities, 224 fatalities have occurred this year, which is a six percent increase from last year. Of those fatalities, 62 were pedestrians, and 57 were unrestrained passengers. Speeding and impairment are the biggest contributors to fatal accidents in the Las Vegas area.

In addition to the partnership with Lyft, the Zero Fatalities Coalition plans to begin its Don’t Kill a Dream campaign on Halloween. The campaign will continue through the holiday season. Because Nevada is the only state with 24-hour alcohol access and legal marijuana, impaired driving in a consistent problem. Don’t Kill a Dream campaign aims to educate the public about the risks associated with impaired driving and increase safe driving behaviors like sober driving and planning a ride.

Even with partnerships like this, accidents are still bound to happen. In the event you’re involved in an accident while in a rideshare vehicle, it’s important to understand your legal rights and options and what you can do to maximize your chances of making a full recovery.
